The annual haute couture fashion week in Shanghai got underway on Wednesday night on the Bund, showcasing the abilities of the country’s up-and-coming designers and revitalizing traditional crafts.
A lavish fashion display served as the centerpiece of the Fosun Foundation Shanghai’s opening ceremony for the 11th Shanghai New Customization Week.
The annual festival will continue until November 20 in the larger Yuyuan block between the Yuyuan Garden Malls and the Bund, pushing Shanghai’s ambition to become the global capital of design.
According to the Shanghai International Fashion Federation, the event’s organizer, the focus of this year’s couture week is on Chinese customs and the United Nations’ designation of “intangible cultural heritage.”
“The annual customization week has become the top platform to incubate and drive the development of haute couture brands in Shanghai, China, and Asia,” said Xu Xiaoliang, president of the federation and former chief executive of Fosun International.
